Year 7 Reading Project: Language and Identity
This term your extended homework will be to explore three different texts which look at the themes of language and identity. One of these texts can be a film.
You need to look for texts which have a theme of language or identity such as a story about a character growing up or an autobiography about someone finding their identity.
Or perhaps a novel which is written in a different dialect or is about someone learning a new language. It could be a text which was written years ago and therefore has a different style of English such as Shakespeare’s plays and poetry.
You should have a think about the first text and ask me and the librarian for tips about what to choose.
Everyone should have chosen their first text by Thursday 15th November 2012.
You will be making presentations to the class about your texts in the last two weeks of term. You will be expected to understand the story/themes of the text but also be able to talk about why it links to language and identity.
Here is a reminder of what we have decided so far about language and identity.
Language: The words used by people to communicate, these can be different depending on where you are from. Your personal background can also influence the way you speak and the types of words you use. People can be prejudiced about other’s use of language.
Identity: Who you are. This can be made up of a number of different factors such as your family; your interests and talents; what you read; where you live; how you speak and much more.
